School in Appiano

School in Appiano
This school building project is based on the idea of making minimal interventions on the existing structures to be preserved while limiting land consumption as much as possible by recreating an expansion of the school within the footprint of the existing building. Industrialisation is at the basis of the project idea, both for the construction system and the façade.
Data

The project proposes a compact volume with a pitched roof shaped to connect and integrate with the eaves lines of the west wing. A building that encloses both school and after-school activities with certain spaces – such as the library and the multi-purpose hall – accessible to external users.

The vertical and horizontal structures adopt a prefabricated solution made of X-LAM cross-laminated solid wood. The envelope of the new building was designed with a modular ventilated façade made off-site with non-anodised aluminium panels offering great advantage in terms of installation speed. The interior, made of exposed wood, will provide the necessary warmth to make the classrooms and laboratories feel like domestic places.
